11th Annual Taste of the Garden is Back
with a New Delicious Twist!

On April 25th, 2024, experience an evening full of community celebration, guest speakers, philanthropic and advocacy awardees, live cooking demos, and much more. The Taste of the Garden brings together industry experts, youth advocates, local partners, and community members. At the heart of the event is our partnership with Kid Power students, who will join renowned chefs, Food Educator Chef JojoResident Chef Embassy of Haiti and Former White House Chef Sebastien Salomon, and Food Ambassador and Executive Chef Kaimana Chee, in electrifying cooking showcases. Witness the magic of collaboration and creativity as they whip up culinary delights before your eyes.

 

This year, we are honored to present the 2024 Excellence in Leadership Award to the remarkable Mrs. Shawn Yancy, a philanthropist, EMMY Award winner, tireless community advocate, and esteemed Washington News Anchor. In addition, we will also shine a spotlight on a local hero with the 2024 Community Hero Award, recognizing their unwavering dedication to uplifting our community.

 

Join us as we recognize and celebrate the outstanding efforts of those who positively impact our community and youth. Let’s honor their efforts and inspire one another to continue creating positive change. So let’s get ready to Sip, Savor, and Stroll with special guests: Musican Emma G, Master Sommelier Nadine Brown, and Author Maryah Greene. This event includes chef demonstrations, guest speakers, wine tasting, heavy hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, a silent auction, and a 50/50 raffle.

Do you know a high school student interested in exploring leadership opportunities and gaining community service hours? Kid Power’s Service Academy allows current 9th-11th grade students an opportunity to create their own Service Learning project, take on the role of teaching assistant, and earn up to 75 community service hours. Program Manager Aiden Teplitzky Dobens and Volunteer Coordinator Priscilla Barrera attended and explored the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Expo held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. At our 11th Annual Taste of the Garden, we unite a community of passionate chefs, each bringing their culinary love to this unforgettable event! Meet Chef Sebastien (@kuisineking), born and raised in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. His journey from his grandmother's kitchen to culinary school led him to prestigious roles, from head chef at the @whitehouse to the resident chef for the @embassyofhaiti.usa. As a competitor on @foodnetwork, Sebastien aspires to own the very first 3 Michelin Star restaurant that highlights the historic influence of Haitian culture and cuisine around the world.

Meet another of our impressive and enthusiastic chefs for Taste of the Garden, held on April 25th. Chef Kaimana Chee (@kaimana77) is the owner of Chef Kaimana, LLC, and the Executive Chef of Uncle’s Hawaiian Grindz, @eatatuncles, a modern Hawaiian restaurant located in Fallston, MD. Over the last decade, Chef Kaimana has traveled to over 40 countries as a chef/brand ambassador for several companies including Grounded Foods, EAT Just, Blue California Ingredients, and GOOD Meat. A native Hawaiian, Kaimana blends his multi-ethnic upbringing with his passion for food. A published author of “Tots on Flavor”, a culinary award winner, and a guest chef appearing on @foodnetwork, and @masterchefonfox, Kaimana adds a refreshing and exciting spin to the culinary experience.

In conclusion of Women’s History Month, we highlight youth poet laureate @amandascgorman. Amanda is the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history, as well as an award-winning writer and cum laude graduate of harvard, where she studied Sociology. In 2017, she was appointed the first-ever National Youth Poet Laureate by @urbanwordnyc.
