11th Annual Taste of the Garden is Back
with a New Delicious Twist!

On April 25th, 2024, experience an evening full of community celebration, guest speakers, philanthropic and advocacy awardees, live cooking demos, and much more. The Taste of the Garden brings together industry experts, youth advocates, local partners, and community members. At the heart of the event is our partnership with Kid Power students, who will join renowned chefs, Food Educator Chef JojoResident Chef Embassy of Haiti and Former White House Chef Sebastien Salomon, and Food Ambassador and Executive Chef Kaimana Chee, in electrifying cooking showcases. Witness the magic of collaboration and creativity as they whip up culinary delights before your eyes.

This year, we are honored to present the 2024 Excellence in Leadership Award to the remarkable Mrs. Shawn Yancy, a philanthropist, EMMY Award winner, tireless community advocate, and esteemed Washington News Anchor. In addition, we will also shine a spotlight on a local hero with the 2024 Community Hero Award, recognizing their unwavering dedication to uplifting our community.

Join us as we recognize and celebrate the outstanding efforts of those who positively impact our community and youth. Let’s honor their efforts and inspire one another to continue creating positive change. So let’s get ready to Sip, Savor, and Stroll with special guests: Musican Emma G, Master Sommelier Nadine Brown, and Author Maryah Greene. This event includes chef demonstrations, guest speakers, wine tasting, heavy hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, a silent auction, and a 50/50 raffle.

August 12th is International Youth Day, designated by the United Nations to raise awareness of global issues facing the next generations. Thandiwe Abdullah’s (@thandiweabdullah) work as an activist reminds us of the hope youth efforts bring. Abdullah’s lifelong advocacy culminated in their co-creation of the BLM Youth Vanguard (sourced under @blmlosangeles). We are continually inspired by youth leadership and want to hear what that means to you: if there’s a youth you admire, comment below on how they inspire you! #InternationalYouthDay #KidPowerDC #YouthNonprofits #DCPS #DCNonprofits #ChildrenAreTheFuture 🌍 ...

Our protégés and mentors had a blast last weekend with @monumental_sports. Protégés and mentors were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the @capitalonearena and had the chance to create their own “Marvel” themed night focused on marketing, sales, and game entertainment. Our students had an amazing time learning and exploring. Thank you to Monumental Sports for an incredible event!

As we close out our Summer Leadership Academy, we reflect on the memories, lessons learned, and new friends made. Our students expressed their creativity through projects and dance lessons, explored critical thinking through writing exercises and group discussions, and learned more about health and wellness through interactive lessons with our VeggieTime program. Thank you to our incredible Summer Staff, our community partners, and most importantly, our students!
