11th Annual Taste of the Garden is Back
with a New Delicious Twist!
On April 25th, 2024, experience an evening full of community celebration, guest speakers, philanthropic and advocacy awardees, live cooking demos, and much more. The Taste of the Garden brings together industry experts, youth advocates, local partners, and community members. At the heart of the event is our partnership with Kid Power students, who will join renowned chefs, Food Educator Chef Jojo, Resident Chef Embassy of Haiti and Former White House Chef Sebastien Salomon, and Food Ambassador and Executive Chef Kaimana Chee, in electrifying cooking showcases. Witness the magic of collaboration and creativity as they whip up culinary delights before your eyes.
This year, we are honored to present the 2024 Excellence in Leadership Award to the remarkable Mrs. Shawn Yancy, a philanthropist, EMMY Award winner, tireless community advocate, and esteemed Washington News Anchor. In addition, we will also shine a spotlight on a local hero with the 2024 Community Hero Award, recognizing their unwavering dedication to uplifting our community.
Join us as we recognize and celebrate the outstanding efforts of those who positively impact our community and youth. Let’s honor their efforts and inspire one another to continue creating positive change. So let’s get ready to Sip, Savor, and Stroll with special guests: Musican Emma G, Master Sommelier Nadine Brown, and Author Maryah Greene. This event includes chef demonstrations, guest speakers, wine tasting, heavy hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, a silent auction, and a 50/50 raffle.

We had another impactful week at our Summer Leadership Academy! 🌟 We kicked off last week with a visit from Aliyah McNeely, Legislative Policy Advisor from the office of Chairman Phil Mendelson. We topped it off with Kid Power Board Chair Gregory Henderson, @districtsportsreport, celebrating his birthday by spending it with our energetic students. Listening to their stories and hearing about the activities they love the most was inspiring. When our community leaders and partners engage with our young people, our students know they have a community of support behind them. 💪✨

Fun fact: July is Disability Pride Month! Historical events like the Capitol Crawl, a protest held right here in DC, demonstrate the impact of the disability rights movement. Jennifer Keelan-Chaffins (@jkclegacy) faced discrimination for having cerebral palsy and was among the youngest protesters at the Capitol Crawl at only 8 years old — when activists crawled up the steps of the Capitol building to support the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act and to protest the barriers they faced every day. Her story reminds us that we can all make a difference, no matter our age
