11th Annual Taste of the Garden is Back
with a New Delicious Twist!
On April 25th, 2024, experience an evening full of community celebration, guest speakers, philanthropic and advocacy awardees, live cooking demos, and much more. The Taste of the Garden brings together industry experts, youth advocates, local partners, and community members. At the heart of the event is our partnership with Kid Power students, who will join renowned chefs, Food Educator Chef Jojo, Resident Chef Embassy of Haiti and Former White House Chef Sebastien Salomon, and Food Ambassador and Executive Chef Kaimana Chee, in electrifying cooking showcases. Witness the magic of collaboration and creativity as they whip up culinary delights before your eyes.
This year, we are honored to present the 2024 Excellence in Leadership Award to the remarkable Mrs. Shawn Yancy, a philanthropist, EMMY Award winner, tireless community advocate, and esteemed Washington News Anchor. In addition, we will also shine a spotlight on a local hero with the 2024 Community Hero Award, recognizing their unwavering dedication to uplifting our community.
Join us as we recognize and celebrate the outstanding efforts of those who positively impact our community and youth. Let’s honor their efforts and inspire one another to continue creating positive change. So let’s get ready to Sip, Savor, and Stroll with special guests: Musican Emma G, Master Sommelier Nadine Brown, and Author Maryah Greene. This event includes chef demonstrations, guest speakers, wine tasting, heavy hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, a silent auction, and a 50/50 raffle.

Armani Crabbe first joined Kid Power as a student in our After-School programming. Today, she serves as an instructor for this very program. From participating in educational lessons to creating them for her students, Armani reflects on her journey with Kid Power fondly. Last weekend, our protégés and mentor matches met at the Anacostia Community Museum (@smithsonianacm) to bond and connect during a denim painting session. August 12th is International Youth Day, designated by the United Nations to raise awareness of global issues facing the next generations. Thandiwe Abdullah’s (@thandiweabdullah) work as an activist reminds us of the hope youth efforts bring. Our protégés and mentors had a blast last weekend with @monumental_sports. Protégés and mentors were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the @capitalonearena and had the chance to create their own “Marvel” themed night focused on marketing, sales, and game entertainment. As we close out our Summer Leadership Academy, we reflect on the memories, lessons learned, and new friends made. Our students expressed their creativity through projects and dance lessons, explored critical thinking through writing exercises and group discussions, and learned more about health and wellness through interactive lessons with our VeggieTime program.
