AAAS Brings “The Science of Me” to D.C. Students Over the Summer 

Since its inception in 1986, Science in the Summer has brought free, hands-on science education activities to more than a quarter-million children around the country. This summer, that number grows as thousands of children are taking part in the newest Science in the Summer program featuring the science of the human body, “The Science of Me.” (Read More)

Our partnership with @pulitzercenter allowed our Kid Power Explorers to engage with Photographer of the Year, Pablo Albarenga, and Time for Kids Editor, Jaime Joyce. Students learned about under-reported news stories involving activism by Indigenous youth from the Amazon, a teenager in Mexico who has decided to leave a gang and work to support young people in his community, and refugee migration from Honduras, Myanmar, and Sudan. Thank you @capxlab for partnering with #KidPowerDC! KP students had the opportunity to learn about local biodiversity and the ecosystems in Southeast DC. Students focused on the Rock Creek Park and Anacostia Tidal Wetlands ecosystems and created Phylo cards (a global trading card game aimed at raising awareness for biodiversity). At #KidPowerDC we love expanding our students' knowledge of food with our VeggieTime enrichment. Recently, a second-grader from Barnard Elementary School told our FoodCorps Member, Farmer Al, how excited she was to meet Farmer Al. "I’ve never met a real-life farmer." She continued to talk about how excited she was for them to grow and eat their own food. She mentioned that she never thought about being able to grow her own food before Kid Power. Being a part of the process is truly so special. #VeggieTime ...

Thank you to @danceloft14 for providing our students with insight on both the effects of climate change and the world of ballet. The virtual field trip performance on GLACIER: A Climate Change Ballet, performed by MOVEIUS Contemporary Ballet was a huge hit. Throughout the performance, students spoke to a company member about the meaning of the piece and learned about the dancing and choreography behind Glacier. #KidPowerDC is honored to work with 4 local educators from @urban_teachers Teachers this summer for our Virtual Summer Leadership Academy: KP Explorers. Ms. Alexis, Ms. Gabrielle, Ms. Maggie, and Ms. Molly come from schools throughout the District to deliver quality ELA programming to our students weekly while keeping our students engaged and informed during this unprecedented time. In their sessions, students will write their own endings to a Brazilian fairytale, compare and contrast the messages of two Middle Eastern fables, participate in a virtual reenactment of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, and research the Australian Bushfires. We are excited to have them on our Kid Power Team! #SummerLearning #CommunityPartners ...
