What is CookieTime? CookieTime! is a youth bakery owned and operated by DC middle school students with the assistance of the CakeLove bakery. Students bake and sell chocolate chip, peanut butter, sugar, and oatmealraisin cookies at bake sales outside the Calvary Baptist Church inChinatown.  They learn important food preparation, business, and financialliteracy skills from CakeLove bakers and professional volunteers.   

  

Our students have formed CookieTime! in order to address youth issues in the District.  Each year, they work with high school mentors at Georgetown Day School to research one local and one out-of-the-District issue.  Students are currently looking at the DC public school system.  They are taking pictures of problems in their schools with help from Critical Exposure, an organization that teaches documentary photography. They are also creating questionnaires for themselves and for their schoolmates to complete in preparation for a presentation to Chancellor Rhee's office and local reporters.  Additionally, students are raising money through their bake sales for a service project to improve DC schools.  Finally, they will use their profits to support a service trip to New Orleans in the summer of 2008, where they will work with youth affected by Hurricane Katrina.
