“This organization has provided a sanctuary where I could embrace my visual impairment without fear or reservation. Reflecting on the past three years with Kid Power, I am filled with gratitude for a journey that has been nothing short of beautiful and unforgettable.”
Faithful, Protégé
A New Perspective on Mentorship
We believe language shapes perspective. That’s why we use “protégé” instead of “mentee.” This shift reflects our commitment to a mentorship model that focuses on recognizing and building on young people’s abilities and potential rather than addressing deficits. Our approach inspires protégés to see themselves as capable, influential, and accountable for their futures.

Community Mentoring Program
Our Community Mentoring Program provides middle and high school students with the support and guidance they need to achieve their dreams. Engaging youth in grades 8-12, this program connects students with dedicated community mentors who commit to year-long partnerships. Through in-person engagement, weekly check-ins, and a structured roadmap, mentors help protégés grow academically, explore careers, and develop personally, all while building meaningful, lasting relationships.
A Program Rooted in Best Practices
Grounded in national best practices and enriched by Kid Power’s unique approach. Key elements include:
- Tailored Recruitment: We leverage Kid Power alumni, instructors, and AmeriCorps members to ensure relatable, supportive matches.
- Extensive Training: Protégés work alongside mentors to identify their strengths, build self-confidence, and set meaningful goals.
- Ongoing Support: Monthly check-ins and case management ensure every match has the resources and guidance needed to overcome challenges and maximize growth.
- Mentoring Roadmap: Protégés and mentors collaborate on goal-setting in academics, careers, civic engagement, and personal development, creating a clear path forward.
Inspiring Growth and Confidence
The program celebrates every protégé’s unique journey, fostering leadership and self-awareness.
Key Outcomes (SY23-24):
- 89% of youth feel confident in their schoolwork
- 87% made progress toward their goals with mentor support.
- 89% feel comfortable solving problems and speaking with peers, with significant increases in both areas.
- 100% of youth who completed the program graduated from high school.
- 78% of students reported enjoying learning, with noticeable growth in engagement and self-confidence.
Changing Lives Through Mentorship
Every protégé’s journey is unique, and the impact of mentorship is life-changing.
“Mentorship is the best thing. My daughter didn’t have initiative a while back, but now it’s there, she’s become more honest and caring. Some things she won’t tell me as her mother, but it’s so important she has someone to share with. Mentorship is key to everything.” — Ms. Speaks, Parent
