11th Annual Taste of the Garden is Back
with a New Delicious Twist!
On April 25th, 2024, experience an evening full of community celebration, guest speakers, philanthropic and advocacy awardees, live cooking demos, and much more. The Taste of the Garden brings together industry experts, youth advocates, local partners, and community members. At the heart of the event is our partnership with Kid Power students, who will join renowned chefs, Food Educator Chef Jojo, Resident Chef Embassy of Haiti and Former White House Chef Sebastien Salomon, and Food Ambassador and Executive Chef Kaimana Chee, in electrifying cooking showcases. Witness the magic of collaboration and creativity as they whip up culinary delights before your eyes.
This year, we are honored to present the 2024 Excellence in Leadership Award to the remarkable Mrs. Shawn Yancy, a philanthropist, EMMY Award winner, tireless community advocate, and esteemed Washington News Anchor. In addition, we will also shine a spotlight on a local hero with the 2024 Community Hero Award, recognizing their unwavering dedication to uplifting our community.
Join us as we recognize and celebrate the outstanding efforts of those who positively impact our community and youth. Let’s honor their efforts and inspire one another to continue creating positive change. So let’s get ready to Sip, Savor, and Stroll with special guests: Musican Emma G, Master Sommelier Nadine Brown, and Author Maryah Greene. This event includes chef demonstrations, guest speakers, wine tasting, heavy hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, a silent auction, and a 50/50 raffle.

At our 11th Annual Taste of the Garden, we unite a community of passionate chefs, each bringing their culinary love to this unforgettable event! Meet Chef Sebastien (@kuisineking), born and raised in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. His journey from his grandmother's kitchen to culinary school led him to prestigious roles, from head chef at the @whitehouse to the resident chef for the @embassyofhaiti.usa. As a competitor on @foodnetwork, Sebastien aspires to own the very first 3 Michelin Star restaurant that highlights the historic influence of Haitian culture and cuisine around the world.

Meet another of our impressive and enthusiastic chefs for Taste of the Garden, held on April 25th. Chef Kaimana Chee (@kaimana77) is the owner of Chef Kaimana, LLC, and the Executive Chef of Uncle’s Hawaiian Grindz, @eatatuncles, a modern Hawaiian restaurant located in Fallston, MD. Over the last decade, Chef Kaimana has traveled to over 40 countries as a chef/brand ambassador for several companies including Grounded Foods, EAT Just, Blue California Ingredients, and GOOD Meat. A native Hawaiian, Kaimana blends his multi-ethnic upbringing with his passion for food. A published author of “Tots on Flavor”, a culinary award winner, and a guest chef appearing on @foodnetwork, and @masterchefonfox, Kaimana adds a refreshing and exciting spin to the culinary experience.

In conclusion of Women’s History Month, we highlight youth poet laureate @amandascgorman. Amanda is the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history, as well as an award-winning writer and cum laude graduate of harvard, where she studied Sociology. In 2017, she was appointed the first-ever National Youth Poet Laureate by @urbanwordnyc. At @jowilsoncardinals, 5th-grade students engaged in a lesson celebrating the Japanese holiday, Children’s Day. Students first created their versions of Koinobori, a Japanese craft flown during celebrations. After presenting their creations, they enjoyed mochi ice cream. Kid Power is deeply saddened by the passing of former Board Member and long-term Kid Power supporter, Kedda May Williams. Kedda began her journey with Kid Power as a volunteer at Mentor's Inc. and continued to stay involved when the program integrated with Kid Power in 2019. Serving in many positions, including Board Chairperson and interim Executive Director for Mentors, Inc. and Board Member with Kid Power. Kid Power's Executive Director, Andria Tobin, reflected on her time with Kedda, "There are very few individuals that after 5 years, you remember exactly what they were wearing, their smile, and their presence. I vividly recall all of these details when Kedda entered our conference room to inquire about potentially merging Mentor's Inc. with Kid Power. Inc. Kedda was a powerful, inspirational, and beautiful force whose impact on this world will remain for generations.”

Our third-graders explored the rich history of art and murals in Washington, DC. Starting with personal reflections on the meaning of murals, students engaged in discussions on how murals mirror communities, culture, and individual expression. They also acknowledged the importance of murals in their schools and classrooms. Calling all OSSE DOT Families: Monthly Parent Stipend Program Application due March 15! 🚨
The DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education, @osse.dc, is launching a new program to provide a monthly payment to eligible parents or guardians that choose to opt out of OSSE-DOT provided vehicle or bus and self-transport their student to and from school. This also includes drop off and pick up for special services the student receives that are related to their education. Eligible families who are approved to participate in the program will receive $400 per month to support self-transportation of students. For info & to apply:

Kid Power's long-standing partnership with @dcpublicschools, has been instrumental in our growth over the past 21 years. Today, we are grateful to highlight the incredible collaboration between our After-School program and @stanton_dcps. Beginning in 2013 when Kid Power received an invitation to provide After-School programming to the school, Kid Power became Stanton's primary Out-of-School Time program provider for 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students. Currently serving 70 students at Stanton, Kid Power also provides a hands-on outdoor learning classroom through our VeggieTime enrichment programming.
Over the years, we have built a foundation of trust, empowerment, and shared vision with the Stanton community. Our accomplishments include partnering with DCPS teachers during Academic Power Hour, collaborating with @americorps and @cityyear for program support, attending Student Award Ceremonies, increasing our "KP Circles," and launching our in-school High Impact Tutoring program at Stanton in 2022, plus so much more. Ahmya, a 5th-grade student at Stanton and a member of our After-School program, states, "Kid Power should be open 24/7, I never want to leave!"

Throughout this academic year, students enrolled in our High Impact Tutoring program at all Kid Power school sites have demonstrated remarkable academic progress, improving by 80% or more. Through proactive collaboration with school partners via monthly meetings, biweekly coaching check-ins for tutors to enhance their instructional skills, and weekly progress notes filled with encouraging feedback for students, our program continues to have an incredible impact. Connecting over shared passions such as watching NBA games, movies, music, and traveling, they’ve built a strong foundation for their connection. As Warren transitioned from high school to working in DC, the pair kept in contact and continued to check out local lunch spots and movies.
