_“We take care of the garden by watering it and by keeping bad bugs away so that they don’t eat the plants”_

At only 7 years old, second grader Delilah's understanding of garden maintenance helped her write an essay titled: "Why Barnard's Garden is the Best" that won the "Best School Garden" award from the Office of the State Superintendent of Education! We're so proud of Delilah and love to see her enthusiasm for gardening!

Kid Power has made significant enhancements and improvements to the garden at Barnard over the last year, including building a 400 sq. ft. state-of-the-art greenhouse to extend hands-on learning opportunities year-round. Delilah will present her essay on her favorite garden activities (harvesting and cooking) and favorite food grown (tomatoes) at the awards ceremony this afternoon!

Kid Power students are thrilled to be back to visiting their mentors at Georgetown Day and Sidwell Friends Schools each week through Kid Power’s Public-Private School Network. Launched in 2004, the partnership has been instrumental in helping to bridge socio-economic and cultural barriers throughout DC while giving all participants lasting academic and social benefits.

This year, we’re thrilled to see former Kid Power student, Jayla Arroyo (bottom left in gray), become a mentor at Georgetown Day School!

Jayla participated in the Public-Private Network as a Kid Power student at Tubman Elementary and then at Cesar Chavez PCS. As a mentee, Jayla learned about what educational resources and experiences Georgetown Day School could offer her. She applied to and enrolled at the school in 2014. She now stays connected and gives back by volunteering as a weekly Kid Power mentor!

In the first visit to Georgetown Day of the year, Jefferson Middle School students learned about crystal formation by making rock candy with their mentors in the GDS Innovation Lab!

Kid Power’s senior staff will be moving to a brand new office space this winter that has been donated to us by the E Street Development!

The office will be located in the revitalizing Southwest corridor at 400 E St. SW in the new Hyatt Place Hotel. With this move, our staff will have more meeting space, an open work station concept, and quicker access to many of our school sites. Further, the savings in rent will allow Kid Power to allocate additional resources directly to serving more students!

We need your help! Is your company moving to a new office? Interested in making an in-kind donation? Kid Power is currently looking for partnerships to help furnish our beautiful new office space. If you’re interested and able to help out, please contact Courtney Moran at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Thank you!
